So Percussion Programs

What We Do and Why

Friday, February 8 @7:30pm, City Auditorium

So’s unique repertoire stems from the necessity of invention. It is a combination of newly commissioned pieces, a few classics, and our own compositions.  Our recent tradition still has so much room for exploration and growth. This concert ties together two of the most influential composers from our past – John Cage and Steve Reich – with some of our own ideas.

A New Era

Saturday, February 9 @7:30pm, City Auditorium

In 2002, we had just enough (actually not even enough) money together to commission David Lang to write us a piece for percussion quartet.  David surprised and delighted us with a huge statement:  the three movement, 36 minute the so-called laws of nature.

Since the turn of the millennium, we have been asking many other folks to create new works and share new ideas with us through percussion music.  Glenn Kotche is the drummer for the band Wilco, and has become a noted composer in his own right.  Oscar Bettison took the idea of “new” seriously and created a gorgeous work for amplified chromatic tuning forks.  Jason and Josh created a new Double Music (after John Cage and Lou Harrison) especially for our show in Montgomery.
