2012 Competition Rules

Percussion Competition Rules


Eligibility: Ensembles must reside within the Gulf States area.  The Gulf States area is defined as including the five states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana. Winners must be able to attend the Festival in order to receive their prizes.

Submissions: Please email your ensemble’s audio entry to  While you will not be judged on the quality of your recording, remember that So Percussion will select the winning ensemble from a review of all submitted recordings. So judging can be anonymous, the ensemble’s name and/or any school affiliation must not appear in the title of the recording or work, if original. Ensembles must have necessary permissions in place to perform copyrighted works. ClefWorks reserves the disqualify any recording that fails to comply or is deemed offensive, in its sole discretion.

Prize: The winner will receive $1,000 as well as $500 to apply toward reasonable travel expenses from any Gulf States location to ClefWorks February 2013 Festival. ClefWorks will assist the winner with securing lodging in Montgomery, Alabama. The winning group will have the opportunity to participate in a master class with So Percussion prior to performing with So Percussion during the Festival. The piece to be played will be one of So Percussion’s choosing. A runner up will be chosen and will receive $500 as well as the opportunity to observe the winning ensemble’s master class.

Age limit: There is no age limit.

Entry fee: A fee of $30, in money order or personal check drawn on a U.S. bank, payable to ClefWorks, Inc. should accompany your submission.

Deadline for submission: Recordings must be emailed by January 8, 2013 to be guaranteed consideration. A recording will not be considered if an accompanying entry fee is not received by January 11, 2013.

Mail entry fees to: ClefWorks 2012 Festival Competition, P. O. Box 242307, Montgomery, AL 36124-2307. Please also include a cover letter stating your ensemble name, video entry name, email address, phone number, and mailing address along with an accompanying program note and bio.

Festival Dates: February 5 through February 9, 2013.  The winning percussion ensemble will be invited to attend a master class with So Percussion on February 8 and to perform a piece with So Percussion on February 9. The runner-up will be invited to observe a master class with So Percussion on February 8.

Judges: Finalists and the ultimate winner will be selected by So Percussion.

Announcement of Winner:  The winner will be announced by January 20, 2013.  A public announcement will be made, and the winning composer will also be contacted personally.  The result will also be posted at

  • There is no time limit for submissions, but entries should ideally be no longer than 15 minutes.

  • More than one audio recording may be submitted, but an entry fee must accompany each submission.
